Then the sanding began:
I started with 100 grit. Went to 180 on a flat block, and also on the 3D printed blocks. Then finished this round with a 400 grit flexible 'block'.
Next step is to apply another coat of epoxy. Will tint this coat with a different colour, to show if I'm close to breaking through when sanding. Will apply this coat as thinly as possible, as the surfaces are very close to being perfectly flat. This coat's purpose is to reestablish a contiguous epoxy shell around the blank.
